In today’s world, where countless health and beauty regimens exist, most people are searching for the best products to make their lives easier and healthier. However, with the new cleansers and soaps available on the market, one major concern is how our bodies will react to these products and how their production will affect the environment. Fortunately, castile soap has become popular for its environmentally conscious properties and mildness. What makes castile soap different from other soaps is that there are various safe ways to use it.

Comparison Between Castile Soap vs. Other Soaps

Most soaps contain lye (sodium hydroxide) and animal-based fats. Additionally, they include fragrances, scents, and other preservatives—ingredients you may not want in your products because they can cause negative reactions on your skin.

The good news is that castile soap is made from natural ingredients such as olive oil and other vegetable-based oils. In other words, pure castile soap is biodegradable, nontoxic, natural, and free from synthetic ingredients. Castile soap was first produced in the Mediterranean and later became popular across Europe. Historically, castile soap has been used in various ways.

Castile soap is environmentally friendly and ethically superior to many other soaps. One major reason people choose castile soap is that it reduces environmental impact and is a cruelty-free, vegan product. Additionally, its emphasis on natural ingredients makes it gentler than many alternatives. This means it is safe to use on both your home and your body. Typically, it is much milder and contains fewer additives, ensuring that it won’t strip away too much natural oil from your skin. Instead, it allows your skin to better retain hydrating products compared to harsher soaps.

Benefits and Uses of Castile Soap

Castile soap can be used for many applications, just like your regular soap or detergent. What really sets it apart is its use of olive oil. Just as olive oil provides benefits when consumed, it offers similar benefits when applied topically. For centuries, people have used olive oil as a moisturizer. Olive oil–based soap is especially beneficial for those with sensitive or irritated skin because it has a mild anti-inflammatory effect and is less harsh than other soaps.

Also, note that castile soap is more concentrated than other soaps. Therefore, it should be diluted before use on your home or skin. To dilute, take a small amount, place it on a washcloth or in your hand, and mix with water until it forms a thinner paste and foam. Then gently massage it on your skin or any surface.

Different Ways of Using Castile Soap

As A Face Wash

You want to preserve the natural oils on your skin and keep it moisturized. While natural face oils, such as jojoba oil, can help maintain hydration, many face oils contain synthetic ingredients that may irritate sensitive or acne-prone skin or even block pores. Fortunately, when diluted, castile soap avoids these issues. With fewer ingredients, it can be more beneficial than traditional soaps or face washes.

As A Shampoo

With its limited ingredients, castile soap is also a good choice for shampoo. Because it is thick and concentrated, use a smaller amount than you would on other parts of your body. Keep in mind that it could potentially remove color from your hair, so be sure to dilute it even more if you have color-treated hair. Also, try to apply it primarily to your scalp rather than all over your hair, and rinse thoroughly as it can be challenging to remove.

As Hand Soap and Body Wash

If it’s safe for your face, it is likely safe for the rest of your body. If you have rosacea, psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, atopic dermatitis, or acne-prone skin, castile soap may provide added benefits alongside other treatments prescribed by your doctor. Since castile soap is mild and composed of universally accepted ingredients, it is unlikely to worsen these conditions. While you may not see dramatic improvements, it can be a valuable tool for many people. Its effect may vary from person to person.

Foot Baths

A foot bath should not use an abundance of chemical products. Foot baths offer relaxation and relief while hydrating your feet and smoothing rough or thickened skin. When using a foot bath, ensure that the products do not contain too many fragrances, dyes, or preservatives, as these ingredients can cause irritation. Certain ingredients, such as cocoa butter or shea butter, could also increase the risk of fungal infections. Fortunately, if you choose castile soap—diluted as with body wash or shampoo—it can keep your feet hydrated and smooth.

Wound Cleaning

Although castile soap can be used for wound cleaning, results have been mixed. In 1999, a lab study found that castile soap could heal wounds more effectively on its own compared to bacitracin, benzalkonium chloride, saline solution, or a combination thereof. However, in 2015, researchers suggested that saline solution was more effective than castile soap, particularly for cleaning open fractures.

Although further study is needed, castile soap may still be a good option for cleaning surface wounds, provided it is diluted. Using antibacterial soap might not be beneficial, and many have been removed from the market due to potential toxicity. The most important aspect is cleaning the wound, keeping it hydrated, and avoiding irritation or intolerance.
